Living between the beach and the border is hard on a phone. Sand works into ports, salt air corrodes contacts and a phone left on a dashboard in December doesn’t forgive it. None of it shows up as an obvious crack, which is why it catches people out.
Sand is worse than water
Salt water gets the attention, but fine sand is the quieter problem:
- It scratches the screen – grains trapped between the glass and a case, or under a screen protector, do damage every time the phone goes in a pocket.
- It blocks charging ports – a port packed with sand often reads as a dead port, and poking at it with a pin or a paperclip can do real harm.
- It gets into speakers and buttons – muffled calls and sticky buttons usually trace back to grit, not a fault.
What to do: keep the phone in a case that covers the port when you’re on the sand, and if it’s gritty, blow it out gently rather than digging at it. If charging has become unreliable, have the port looked at rather than cleaned with something sharp.
Heat does quiet damage
A phone that gets hot – on the dash, on the sand, in a hot car at the Coolangatta shops – ages faster. Batteries are the first to suffer, and the damage doesn’t reverse when the phone cools down.
What to do: don’t leave a phone in a hot car or in direct sun, and take it out of a thick case while it charges in summer. If the phone has started shutting down or draining fast in the heat, the battery is the place to start.
Salt air and the surf
Salt air corrodes the small metal contacts inside charging ports and speaker grilles over time, and a phone that’s been in the surf is a different problem entirely – salt water keeps working on the inside long after the phone appears to dry out.
What to do: rinse-free is the rule. If a phone has been in the ocean, don’t charge it and don’t put it in rice – bring it in. Our guide to water damage and charging port repairs explains why timing matters.
A cheap habit worth having
A screen protector and a case that keeps sand out are the two things that prevent most of the repairs we see from beach and boat use. Neither is glamorous. Both are far cheaper than a screen replacement.
If your phone is already showing the signs – a port that only charges at an angle, muffled calls, a battery that quits early – bring it into the Coolangatta store and we’ll take a look. If getting to us is the hard part, ask about our Come-to-You mobile repair service.
