A battery that fades is easy to live with for months – right up until the day your phone dies at 2pm with no charger in sight. Here’s how to tell the difference between heavy use and a battery that’s genuinely on the way out.

Signs the battery is the problem

  • It shuts down early. Not just low – a phone that dies at 30 or 40 per cent, or turns off the moment you open the camera.
  • It drops in steps. 60 per cent, then suddenly 45, then 30. Real capacity doesn’t fall in jumps.
  • It runs warm when idle. A battery that heats up while the phone is sitting in your pocket isn’t just busy.
  • The screen or back is lifting. A swollen battery pushes the phone apart. Stop using it and get it looked at – this one isn’t a “wait and see”.
  • It only lasts on battery saver. If everything has to be switched off for the phone to make it through the day, the battery is doing the work the settings shouldn’t have to.

Charging habits that actually help

  • Don’t chase 100 per cent. Sitting at full and plugged in, especially overnight in a warm room, is harder on a battery than a partial charge.
  • Avoid deep drains to zero as a habit. It’s a recalibration trick, not something to do weekly.
  • Watch the heat, not the number. Charging in a hot car or under a pillow on the lounge does more damage than any percentage.
  • Use a decent cable and charger. Worn cables and cheap chargers make the phone work harder and often cause the “charging port is broken” problem people assume they have.
  • Check the case. Thick cases trap heat while charging on the southern Gold Coast in summer.

When to stop nursing it and replace it

If you’ve tried the basics and the phone still won’t make it through a normal day, a replacement battery is usually the cheapest way to keep a good phone going. It’s one of the most common repairs we do, and it’s worth doing before a tired battery has a chance to swell.

What happens when you bring it in

We’ll look at the phone, confirm whether the battery is the cause, check parts availability for your model and tell you what’s involved before anything goes ahead. We repair Apple iPhone, Samsung, OPPO, Google Pixel, Motorola and Nothing Phone devices where parts are available.

Call into the Coolangatta store, or ask about our Come-to-You mobile repair service if you’d rather not be without the phone for a trip across town.
