The hardest part of a broken phone isn’t usually the crack – it’s working out whether to fix it or move on. Here’s how to think it through without overpaying for a repair that isn’t worth doing, or replacing a phone that had years left in it.

Start with what’s actually wrong

Some faults are straightforward, and some mean the phone is on borrowed time:

  • Screen or battery – the two most common repairs, and usually the ones most worth doing.
  • Charging port – often fixable, but worth checking whether it’s the port or simply a worn cable.
  • Water damage – the one to be cautious about. A phone can work for weeks after a soaking and then fail.
  • Multiple faults at once – a cracked screen and a tired battery and a failing port is a different conversation.

Four questions that usually settle it

  1. Is the rest of the phone healthy? A phone that’s fast, holds a charge and takes good photos is worth repairing. One that’s already slow, full of storage and struggling is not.
  2. What would you spend replacing it? Compare a repair against the cost of a comparable device, not against a brand-new flagship. A refurbished phone is a fair comparison and often the middle option.
  3. Is it still getting security updates? A phone that no longer receives them is a bad place to spend repair money, especially if you use it for banking or work.
  4. Does the repair depend on parts that still exist? For less common models, or handsets bought overseas, this is the real deciding factor. It’s the first thing we check.

Don’t forget the phone in the drawer

A spare handset changes the maths completely. If you have one that still works, a cracked screen becomes a short-term swap rather than an emergency – which means you can wait for parts, compare options and make a calm decision.

We sell refurbished smartphones with a 1-year in-store warranty, free data transfer and a fast-charging cable. Popular models are available in store, with a larger range through our supplier network.

Where the local option fits in

If you’re in Coolangatta, Tweed Heads or the surrounding area, it’s worth having someone look at the phone before you decide. A repair that seemed pointless over the phone is sometimes a simple fix once it’s been seen – and if it genuinely isn’t worth repairing, we’ll tell you.

Bring it into the Coolangatta store, or ask about our Come-to-You mobile repair service if getting out is the problem.
